EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE – also known as ‘tapping’

WHAT IS EFT?

EFT is a simple approach used to calm the nervous system. Just about anyone can learn it and benefit. In my sessions I have been blown away at the difference it has made to my clients’ lives, especially those who who have experienced trauma and anxiety. EFT involves gently tapping on specific points in the body whilst focusing on a painful or difficult emotion or situation to bring relief. These acupressure points are also points where the vagus nerve (which transmits messages to and from the brain to many part of the body) is near the surface.

Maybe you have heard of tapping. I learned about it many years ago and must admit it it seemed weird to me. I was suspicious, and maybe you are too. But many therapists have now come to understand that involving the body is key to recovery especially as the fear which debilitates many of us is physiological.

EFT was devised by Gary Craig in the 90s, an offshoot from another more complex approach, TFT. Since that time a good deal of research has been carried out. Amongst other things, this shows that tapping reduces cortisol (a stress hormone) significantly, even after just one session.
